Repentance of a person who deserves to be punished under criminal law and the punishment is related to Divine Right / the Grand Ayatollah Shahroudi’s answer

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Shahroudi answered a question about the repentance of a person who deserves to be punished under criminal law and the punishment is merely related to Divine Right.

Question: If a person commits a Haram deed which deserves to be punished under criminal law, and the punishment is merely related to Divine Right but not concerning people’s right; if the one who has committed Haram deed confesses and repents before the judge, and his repentance is not approved according to one of the religious ways, can his repentance and regret cause the punishment to be nullified or not?

The Grand Ayatollah Shahroudi: If his repentance and correction of case is proven before proceedings, the punishment is nullified.
