The ruling on using paint brushes made in non-Islamic countries / the Grand Ayatollah Sistani’s Fatwa

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Sistani answered questions about using paint brushes made in non-Islamic countries.

Question: Considering that for painting and designing, paint brushes are used, and considering that the best quality ones are imported from non-Islamic countries, and often these brushes are made from pig’s hair; what is the religious ruling on using these brushes? And what is the ruling on writing the Quranic verses and holy narrations by using this type of brush?

The Grand Ayatollah Sistani: Considering that this type of brush is unclean, it is allowed to use it; but if writing the Quran and holy names by this type of brush is considered as disrespectful, it is not allowed.
