Senior cleric criticizes west’s dual policy towards ISIL

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- Senior Iranian cleric Ayatollah Nasser Makarem Shirazi questioned the West’s approach toward the so-called Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

In a meeting with Nikolay Mladenov, UN’s Special Representative for Iraq, the grand Ayatollah censured the West’s dual policy and said it has no honesty in dealing with the terrorist group.

“On the one hand, they condemn the Takfiri group and on other hand secretly help them,” he noted.

He also referred to the international conference on Takfir and extremism, which was held here in Qom recently, and criticized attempts to prevent the spread of news about the great gathering.

The “Extremist and Takfiri Groups in View of Muslim Scholars” conference was held on November 23-24.

Prominent Sunni and Shia Muslim scholars from 83 countries took part in the international event, which aimed to raise awareness about different aspects of the threat of Takfir and extremism.

Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi further said that combating Takfiris militarily is necessary but not enough, adding that Muslim scholars and the media should fight against these groups’ ideology.

The ISIL militants have seized large swathes of land in Iraq and Syria, terrorizing and killing people of all communities, including Shias, Sunnis, Kurds and Christians, in the areas they are controlling.
