Taking possession of inheritance which is gained through Haram ways / the Grand Ayatollah Shobairi’s answer

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi Zanjani answered a question about taking possession of Haram earned inheritance.

Question: We have inherited assets from our father which we know they have not been gained through Halal ways. Can we take possession of these assets?

The Grand Ayatollah Shobairi: It is not allowed to take possession of those specific assets which have been gained through Haram ways; and if those specific assets do not exist, something like them (if there is like for like and its price if it is worth something) are regarded as debts of the deceased which must be paid back before dividing the inheritance, or the inheritors to undertake those debts.
