The importance of having intention to fast in the Month of Ramadhan / The Grand Ayatollah Safi’s answers

SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Safi Golpayegani answered question about having intention to fast in the Month of Ramadhan.

Question: What to do if in the Month of Ramadhan and before dawn, the person forgets to set intention (to fast)?

The Grand Ayatollah Safi: If he remembers before noon, can set intention, and if remembers after noon, the fast is void (Batel); but must not break the fast, and compensate for that day by fasting later on.

Question: If a person intends to fast but does not wake up before dawn to eat and only wakes up for Salaat and then sleeps; is the fasting of such person correct?

The Grand Ayatollah Safi: As long as he intends to fast is enough and eating before dawn is not essential.
