The proper way to fast according to Imam Sadeq (AS)

SHAFAQNA – Regarding the conditions and dimensions of fasting, Imam Sadeq (AS) said: Fasting is not just to avoid food, and it has conditions which by observing them, the fasting becomes complete. When you fast: Protect your tongues from lying; and cover your eyes from inappropriate scenes; and do not be jealous; and do not backbite; do not argue with each other; and do not start disputes; and do not become angry with each other; and do not insult each other; and do not be cruel or irrational to each other; do not neglect remembering God and Salaat; and live as if you can see the Day of Judgment; and prepare provisions for the day of meeting with God; and for your fasting you must have the guardianship of God; and by being silent which comes from inner reflection, avoid whatever is forbidden by God in public and in private; Therefore, if you follow all these deeds completely, you have observed the real fasting. But if you fail to observe any of the deeds which I have described for you, it will be deducted to the same amount from your rewards. Verily, fasting is not just to avoid food or drink, rather Allah (SWT) has made it a barrier against deeds and sayings which can invalidate fasting. How few are the real fasting people, and how many are those who just tolerate hunger [1].
