Question: Whenever a person has committed one of the two cases of lying or backbiting, does his righteousness cease to be valid? Is it necessary to be certain that he has repented; for his righteousness to be restored?
The Grand Ayatollah Makarem: Yes, his righteousness ceases to be valid; and to restore it, he must repent.
