Toowoomba’s Muslim community heartened by generosity

SHAFAQNA – TOOWOOMBA remains a united city determined to help the Muslim community rebuild their fire-ravaged mosque. Imam Abdul Kader delivered an uplifting sermon to his 200-strong congregation during afternoon prayers yesterday in Newington Park. He said the community, regardless of religious beliefs or cultural background, remained united.

“In Toowoomba, we live as one community,” he said. “Regardless of the faith, agenda, culture … it makes it more colourful and better. “The main thing is we need to be together and need to care for each other.” Investigations into the suspected arson of the Garden City Mosque are continuing, with authorities maintaining a guard for public safety and to secure the site from potential further contamination.

While investigations continue, the city’s Muslim community has been overwhelmed with offers to help rebuild the place of worship as well as alternative venues for prayers. Islamic Society of Toowoomba president Professor Shahjahan Khan said the show of support had been heartening. “There have been so many people come forward and offer support,” he said.

“It is so generous.” He said it remained unlikely the mosque would be repaired before the Islamic holy month of Ramadan which starts on June 18.
