SHAFAQAN – Substitutions change games. In the case of this match, they could have saved Alan Pardew’s job.
Tottenham supporters taunted the Newcastle boss with cries of: ‘You’re getting sacked in the morning’ after Emmanuel Adebayor handed the home side a first-half lead.
But Pardew had the last laugh as both of his half-time substitutions, Sammy Ameobi and Remy Cabella, played crucial roles in a stunning Newcastle comeback.
Ameobi equalised, while Cabella laid on Ayoze Perez’s winner, all within 12 minutes of coming on.

Truth be told, Tottenham should have been home and hosed by half-time.
But Pardew won’t care a jot as his side recorded their first Premier League away victory since March 1, when they beat Hull 4-1.
In contrast, Mauricio Pochettino would have left White Hart Lane scratching his head at exactly how his side went home with nothing.
Spurs dominated the opening exchanges, without creating a real clear cut opportunity; Christian Eriksen’s half-volley from distance the highlight of a drab opening 15 minutes.
Newcastle, however, having eased themselves into proceedings could easily have found themselves ahead in the 16th minute if Jack Colback had reacted better to Hugo Lloris’ poor punch from Moussa Sissoko’s cross.
And two minutes later, the visitors found themselves behind after a crisp Tottenham attack.
Steven Taylor did well to block Nacer Chadli’s fierce shot, but he was helpless to prevent Ryan Mason pouncing on the rebound to stan-up an inviting back-post cross that Adebayor dispatched with a text-book header.
Danny Rose fired wildly over the bar after Eriksen and Erik Lamela combined to set-up the left-back soon after the opener as the home side looked to double their lead.
Rose then thought he should have been awarded a penalty as he crossed paths with Gabriel Obertan, but referee Anthony Taylor dismissed Spurs protests, and rightly so after replays showed contact – if any at all – was made outside of the area.
But for flashes from the Magpies, the home side were dominant – but clear cut chances were few and far between.
Mason’s display in midfield was perhaps the most encouraging sign for Pochettino during a unevebtful opening 45 minutes.
The 23-year-old, aside from his assist for the opener, was showing real composure and awareness in the engine room; all in front of the watching Roy Hodgson.

Chadli, with bundles of time on his hands, wasted a good chance in the dying minutes of the first half – volleying Eriksen’s free kick over the bar when he had ample opportunity to take a touch.
Pochettino would have been satisfied with his side’s first-half display, if not overly happy.
With more cutting edge and creativity, Spurs should have been out of sight.
Pardew knew it too, making a double substitution at half-time; Cabella and Ameobi replacing the ineffective Obertan and Vurnon Anita.
But what was to come next, even Pardew couldn’t have believed.
Straight from the kick-off, the excellent Colback found Ameobi, who left Eric Dier for dead, down the left and the forward neatly finished past Lloris.
Pochettino showed little emotion on the home bench, but he must have been furious.

His side, who looked so comfortable in the first-half, were now firmly on the ropes.
So goodness knows what he was thinking when Newcastle took a 57th minute lead when Cabella’s cross from the left-hand side was glanced home by Perez, who was making his first league start for the club at White Hart Lane.
The home supporter were stunned into silence, as were the players.
They were lucky not to find themselves 3-1 down eight minutes later when Cabella fired into the side netting with just Lloris to beat after a powerful burst down the left, leaving Dier and Kaboul in his week.
Pochettino threw on midweek hat-trick hero Harry Kane in the 68th minute in hope of dragging his bewildered side back on level terms.
And the England Under-21 star nearly made an instant impact, but his strike from Rose’s cut-back was well-held by Tim Krul.
Aaron Lennon was introduced 13 minutes from time, in place of Erik Lamela, whose afternoon was a world away from his sensational Rabona goal on Thursday night.
And the winger fired a half-volley over the bar five minutes from time, before Eriksen fired a low shot across the face of Krul’s goal as the Magpies held on for all three points.
