Two explosions strike crowded market in Nigeria

SHAFAQNA – Two blasts struck the main market in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri on Monday, witnesses said.

It was not immediately clear how many people were wounded or killed in the explosions, which went off just before noon.

Maiduguri – the provincial capital and largest city in Nigeria’s restive Borno state – is at the centre of an insurgency led by the Islamist militant group Boko Haram.

Just last week, two women suicide bombers blew themselves up at the same crowded market in Maiduguri, claiming the lives of at least 44 people, according to medical officials. Before that, 56 people were killed in the same area on July 2 after a car bomb struck a group of traders and shoppers.

Although there was no immediately claim of responsibility for Monday’s attack, suspicion is likely to fall on Boko Haram, whose five-year-old campaign for an Islamic state has killed thousands.
