U.S. RESEARCHERS REVEAL HOW WATER CURRENTS SHAPE, DISSOLVE SURROUNDING MATERIAL

SHAFAQNA (International Shia News Association)- The question of how solid materials are acted on and changed by water currents has fascinated humans for a long time. Researchers from NYU’s Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and FloridaState University have publishedfindings in the journal Fluid Mechanics that could have an impact on many industries, including pharmacology and the mining industry.

The researchers immersed hard candy in a flowing current of water. While they pieces were of a similar size, they were not all of the same shape. The research team discovered that all of the pieces were reduced to a consistent (albeit peculiar) shape before being disappearing. This consistent “sculpture” appeared regardless of the speed of the water.

While hard candy, composed of sugar, may allow for the consistency found in these results, the indications of the research could be helpful in theworld of serious science. Understanding the dissolve rate of materials could be helpful in theworld of medication development and chemistry. Additionally, the indication that rate of flow has little effect on the rate of dissolve is very important.

“How flowing fluids generate unique shapes through erosion or dissolution is complex and fascinating,” says Leif Ristroph, an assistant professor at NYU’s Courant Institute and the paper’s senior author.

The information gained from this study could also have impacts on geology and the efforts of those attempting to reclaim and repair coastal lands. Understanding the regular rate of crystal breakdown in water flow could well assist in saving our fragile beaches.
