SHAFAQNA(Shia International News Association)- An influential Democratic senator says the United States is headed in the wrong direction and called on her fellow Democrats to do more for working class people.
Elizabeth Warren, the senator from Massachusetts, told a gathering hosted by the Center for American Progress in Washington on Wednesday that the Democratic Party has lost sight of its priorities in recent years.
“Our country is headed in the wrong direction,” the former Harvard Law School professor said. “The American dream is slipping out of reach.”
“There is a long way to go before Democrats can reclaim the right to say we’re working for America’s people … but don’t forget the good news: our agenda is America’s agenda,” added Warren, who has frequently been mentioned by some political observers as a potential 2016 presidential candidate.
The Republican Party has not only captured a majority in the Senate in the November 4 midterm elections, but it has also achieved a historic victory in the House of Representatives.
This has put President Barack Obama’s rivals in charge of both chambers of Congress during his last two crucial years in office, making life difficult for a president who is looking to establish his legacy with his second term entering a lame-duck phase.
Elsewhere in her remarks, the Democratic lawmaker slammed Republicans on education, job creation and other economic policies.
“The game is rigged but we know how to fix it. We know what to do. We tested the Republican ideas and they failed. They failed spectacularly there’s no denying that fact,” she said.
“The Republicans have a pretty simple philosophy. They say if those at the top have more, more power for the Wall Street players to do what they want and more money from tax cuts, then somehow they can be counted on to build an economy for everyone else,” she stated.
She told her own story, presetting as evidence of what the US government used to do for the American people.
“I am the daughter of a janitor, and Mom worked a minimum wage job at Sears, and today I’m a United States senator,” she said. “Sure, I worked hard, but I succeeded because I grew up in an America that was investing in kids like me.”
