Vienna Mosque Vandalized

SHAFAQNA- In one of the latest anti-Muslim attacks in Austria, a Vienna mosque was vandalized with body parts of a pig on Christmas Day, reflecting a growing anti-Muslim sentiment in the European country.

“This is not an attack against Muslims but the whole of humanity,” Fatih Karadaş, the head of the Turkish-Islamist Union in Vienna (ATIB), told Anadolu Agency on Saturday, December 27.

“We, as Muslims, will preserve our calm and collective attitude.”

On Thursday, December 25, pig’s nose and tripe were hung on the door of Kocatepe mosque in the Austrian capital.

Similar attacks, in which pig’s body parts were used, have repeatedly targeted other Austrian mosques and Islamic schools over the past months.

The Imam Hatip school in Vienna and another new Islamic schools were desecrated last summer with pig’s head.

Earlier this month, an elderly Austrian Muslim woman has been seriously injured after a man attacked her, insulting and knocking her on the floor.

Suffering a spinal injury, the woman has also suffered a lumbar fracture and had to spend seven days in Hanusch hospital.

The attack is the latest in several incidents where women wearing headscarves have been insulted and attacked in Vienna recently.

Last month, another Muslim woman was attacked with her friend in the street, calling them Taliban and ISIL, the so-called Islamic State.

A few weeks ago, another Muslim woman was attacked in the subway.

The attacks increased as the Austrian government approved on December 1 a new counseling hotline to help young Muslims and fight radicalism.

Austrian Muslims are estimated at about half a million or nearly 6 percent of the European country’s 8 million population.

In Vienna, Islam is the second-largest religious grouping, after Roman Catholicism.

Last October, a new amendment to Austria’s century-old law on Islam sparked Muslim concerns.

Two weeks ago, Muslim leaders revealed they have collected 200,000 signatures against the bill that violates Muslims’ rights, accusing it of considering Muslims as second class citizens.
