What does Welayah mean?

SHAFAQNA – Ayah 257 of Surah Al-Baqarah says: Allah (SWT) is the Wali (patron/guardian/friend) of those who believe. What does Wali or Welayah mean in this Ayah? According to famous Shia scholar and Quran commentator, the late Allamah Tabatabaei: The meaning of Welayah of Allah (SWT) is that when the believer (the true servant of God) reaches a stage that his will/determination, satisfaction and anger become the same as God’s and the believer has no will or authority of his own. Allah (SWT) says in the same Ayah: God is the Patron of those who have believed and brings them out of darkness into light.

In Ayah 62 of Surah Al-Yunus is mentioned: Be aware that there is neither fear nor sorrow on God’s friends. In this Ayah Wali is used for God’s servants because Welayah like friendship is two-sided and in this Ayah, it means the will/determination and satisfaction of Allah (SWT) are the same as God’s servants.
