What is genuine asceticism?

SHAFAQNA – In his commentary of the short eloquent saying number 28 in Nahjul Balaghah, the Grand Ayatollah Javadi Amoli said: Imam Ali (AS) said: Pretence of asceticism (high level of self-discipline and avoiding of all forms of indulgence) is not asceticism (Zohd); the ascetic human being (Zahid) must try to cover his/her asceticism; meaning the ascetic human being must conceal his/her asceticism but not hide himself/herself. Therefore, expressing/exhibiting asceticism is bad and concealing asceticism is good. Then, (in this way) the human being can be comfortable, and no one can have improper suspicion about him/her, and no inappropriate thought can come into the mind of the ascetic person.
