Why controlling the tongue is emphasized in Islam?

SHAFAQNA – Tongue can be used to cause friendship and integration or create disunity and dispute. Human’s speech can start enmity or remove differences and bring peace and reconciliation. The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) who is the axis of unity for Ummah, used to control his tongue and never said anything inappropriate or words which were not needed or would cause dispute. Saying less is a practice for self-construction and having control over oneself. Imam Ali (AS) said: The prophet of God (PBUH) guarded his tongue from unnecessary speech and his words brought friendship among people and never caused them to move away or tiredness [1].
