Zarif Expresses “Cautious” Optimism on Nuclear Deal

SHAFAQNA- New York, Sept 22 – Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says he is cautiously optimitic about reaching an agreement on Iran’s peaceful nuclear program in talks with the six global powers as a deal is better than its alternative.

“At the end of the day, the reason for my almost cautious optimism is that everyone knows that the alternative is worse than having a deal that will have, under any circumstances, a good number of opponents….in all capitals: here in the United States, in Iran, elsewhere in Europe, but probably more in Washington and in Tehran.”

He made the remarks in an interview to be broadcast Monday by the CCTV America when asked if he believed a deal can be reached before the November deadline.

Zarif left Tehran for New York last Tuesday to meet counterparts and participate in the next round of negotiations between Iran and the G5+1 on the sidelines of the 69th session of the UN General Assembly.
