10 Indian forces killed by Kashmir attack

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association)- At least ten Indian security forces have been killed in a militant attack in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police say.

The attack was carried out on Friday when unknown militants, armed with grenades and automatic rifles, stormed into a military camp in Uri, near the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the disputed Himalayan region.

“Seven army men, three police and three terrorists died in the firing incident,” a senior Indian police officer said on condition of anonymity.

A police officer also was wounded in the attack, he added.

Tensions are running high in Kashmir ahead of a visit to the disputed region by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Meanwhile, six suspected militants and one Indian soldier died in two days of fighting which started on Tuesday in the snowy and mountainous Naugam area of Kashmir.

India and Pakistan lay claim to the whole region of Kashmir, but each of them only controls a section of it.

New Delhi and Islamabad agreed to a ceasefire along the Line of Control in 2003, and a year later launched talks aimed at brokering a regional peace.

The process was, however, suspended after over 160 people lost their lives in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which New Delhi blamed on Pakistan-based militants.
