EU’s Mogherini: JCPOA is still alive/ Iran’s recent steps is not a major violation of the agreement

SHAFAQNA- JCPOA is still alive and the remaining parties to the Iran nuclear deal do not see Iran’s recent steps as a major violation of the agreement, said European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after an EU foreign ministers meeting in Brussels on Monday that was largely focused on Iran nuclear deal (JCPOA), EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini said that there is no alternative to the JCPOA and it is important to maintain and fully implement it, Al Jazeera told.

She pointed that EU countries are still trying to work on implementing the financial mechanism they have created for Iran known as the INSTEX and this is the most difficult stage in the life of the agreement, according to Mehr News Agency.

The EU top diplomat added that the INSTEX will become operational first between the member states of the nuclear agreement and then other countries will be allowed to join it.

According to Reuters, the remaining parties to the Iran nuclear deal do not see Tehran’s breaches as significant non-compliance and have not indicated any intent to trigger the accord’s disputed mechanism, the European Union’s foreign policy chief said on Monday.

“For the time being, none of the parties to the agreement has signaled their intention to invoke this article, which means that none of them for the moment, for the time being with the current data we have had in particular from the IAEA, that the non-compliance is considered to be significant non-compliance,” Federica Mogherini added.

Mogherini played down those prospects, suggesting that for now the bloc would focus on diplomatic efforts to defuse the crisis.

“The deal is not in good health, but it’s still alive,” Mogherini said. “We hope and we invite Iran to reverse these steps and go back to full compliance with the agreement,” she said, pointing out that they were all reversible.

“Even if I think this is the most dramatic and difficult time, I also think that today everybody realizes that not having the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal) in place anymore would be a terrible option for everybody,” Mogherini said.

France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said Europe had to remain united in trying to preserve the deal and convince Tehran to reverse its decision not to comply with parts of the accord.

“The Europeans have to stay united on this issue,” Le Drian told reporters on Monday.
