SHAFAQNA- Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York on Thursday evening and discussed regional development in the Middle East.
The US imposed restrictions on the staff of the Islamic Republic of Iran’ diplomatic Mission at the United Nations, tension in the region, and a reduction in Iran’s commitments to the JCPOA were discussed in the meeting, Iran’s foreign ministry said.
The illegal seizure of the tanker carrying Iranian oil by UK, regional issues, including the latest developments in Syria, Yemen, and Afghanistan, were among topics discussed between Zarif and UN chief, IRNA reported.
The head of the foreign policy apparatus of the Islamic Republic of Iran arrived in New York on Sunday to attend the United Nations Economic and Social Council meeting, and is scheduled to head to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela, on Friday to attend the NAM. Nicaragua and Bolivia will be the next destination for this delicate journey.
Zarif was speaking on Wednesday at a meeting on the progress of sustainable development goals at the UN headquarters in New York.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad has criticized US sanctions imposed on his country as “economic terrorism.”
Zarif said Iran’s people are subjected to the most brutal form of economic terrorism, deliberately targeting innocent civilians to achieve illegitimate political objectives.
He said the sanctions imposed on Iran by the US represent the greatest threat to the achievement of sustainable development goals in Iran, NHK told.
