The Supreme Religious Authority: Low success rates are a sad phenomenon that calls for concern

SHAFAQNA- Alkafeel: The Supreme Religious Authority confirmed that the low success rates in the educational stages in Iraq, are a sad phenomenon that calls for concern, and calls for the rapid diagnosis of causes and the development of appropriate treatments for them.
These were the important points stated in the second sermon of the blessed Friday prayer of the 15th Dhu al-Qi’dah 1440 AH corresponding to July 19, 2019, which was held in the holy shrine of Imam al-Hussayn (peace be upon him) and led by His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Mahdi al-Karbala’i in which he stated:
Dear brothers and sisters, our topic in the second sermon is about the low level of education in Iraq, what are its causes? What is the possible treatment for this phenomenon?
It’s painful to see a low level of education in Iraq, especially after the Ministry of Education announced the success rate of 34,7% for the ninth-graders, in addition to other low success rates of the other grades. These figures in general reveal the low success rates in Iraq, which is a sad phenomenon that arouses concerns and demands immediate attention to be solved.
First, we note the students of these stages represent the future student base for the university, and also represent tomorrow’s employees serving their country by occupying vital positions. And consequently this low success rate indicates a decline in future performance.
Second, this decline has negative psychological repercussions on students, parents, educational staff, state institutions and the general psychological situation of the country, because it will generate a state of psychological frustration, lack of self-confidence and of confidence in the educational capacity in Iraq to educate this generation, so as to be a development and prosperity in the country.
This psychological situation is a sign of further decline in the future, which threatens Iraq’s educational ranking regionally and internationally, and furthermore the future of Iraq in different areas of life.
So there must be enough interest and care to the education level and development of rapid treatment. In fact, the educational process is the result of an interconnected system that all its components are integrated and linked strongly. They can either fail or win together.
The components of these system are three:
First: Individuals (student, teaching staff, school administration staff, educational institutions staff),
Second: The Educational Institutions (family, school administration, Education Department, Education Ministry, the legislative and executive authority related to the educational process),
Third: The educational curriculum.
Some of the reasons of this decline is the lack of development of the educational capacity of the educational and teaching staff, which remained static face to the different mental and social levels of the students. In many of the countries of the world, the teachers are continuously having training to develop their skills so they can promote the new teaching methods. We need such trainings for the teaching staff, otherwise, the situation will remain the same.
The second reason is the instability of the curriculum and the continuous change of the program. Many of the educational curricula are not appropriate to the mental level of the students, and the suitable requirements are not prepared so the student can understand the new curriculum.
The third reason is the educational methods used in our schools, as we are still following the method of indoctrination, there is no mental stimulation of the students so they can think, analyse and make their opinions. Unfortunately, we are still using the traditional known methods in our educational process that is not up to date.
Fourth reason: The lack of respect for educational and teaching staff regardless of their social level. We need to stop all kind of disrespect or violation of teachers whether inside or outside the school.
Fifth reason: The lack of school buildings and the overcrowding of schools, in addition to the lack of the required natural and healthy conditions in some school buildings. So, it is hoped that the concerned officials give attention and financial allocations to these buildings.
Sixth reason: There is a tendency by many teachers to seek teaching in the private schools, which is a very serious problem as they are trying to collect more money from the students, which affects negatively the educational process. We call on the concerned to sense that it is a divine responsibility, so they do their best for fulfilling their duty.
Seventh reason: The parents are not given enough attention to the educational level of their children, the students are busy playing games or wasting their time on social media, which affect the student’s values and thought if he is not immunized against it.
The eighth reason: The psychological frustration of many students, because after graduation, they do not find a job opportunity. So we call the concerned authorities to give great interest in the industrial field to give ample and sufficient opportunity to the private sector to contribute to the advancement of services and provide great job opportunities for these graduates.
The last commandment that I give to the students, all our hope is on you, you are the future of the country and the hope of change we aspiring for.
We are praying for the success of all. And, the latest of our prayers is; praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds, and Prayers and Allah’s Peace be upon Mohammad and his pure and virtuous lineage.
