Human rights in Islam is to defend the rights of oppressed

SHAFAQNA- What follows is some quotations by Ayatollah Khomeini about the question of human rights, selected from his speeches.

Defending the rights of the oppressed, the sign of Iran’s adherence to human rights

The Islamic Republic is the vanguard of human rights. Our support of the oppressed people in Palestine, in Lebonan, in Iraq, in Afghanistan, anywhere the people are oppressed indicates that. It shows that the flag of human rights rises in this country through faith in Islam. We don’t need to receive advice on human rights.

The wrong foundation of western human rights

The human rights that the west is speaking about is based on wrong principles. Therefore, it is necessary to promote ‘Islamic human rights’ with sound and logical bases among public opinion and judicial organizations in the world.”
The Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution described the announcement by the United Nations – saying that it would close its eyes on the current crime of infanticide in Yemen in return for receiving money from some countries – as a source of embarrassment for humanity. He added: “This scandal and disgrace is against real human rights. We should do legal and judicial work on this matter on a global level.”

Is the West really defending human rights?

Where the rights of more than a billion Muslim are violated by insulting what they hold sacred, human rights advocates are silent or even encouraging. You can see today every imperialist institution, and their scribbling henchmen and hirelings have made a united front in defending a worthless person who presented “The Satanic Verses” to the world: that blasphemous heretic Salman Rushdie. Is this in defence of human rights!? Why don’t they speak out about human rights when 200 million Indian Muslims are divested of their rights, and their place of worship is destroyed by an ignorant prejudiced mob provoked by the enemies of Islam and Muslims? Why don’t they defend human rights in Bosnia and Herzegovina where millions have been subjected to the harshest and most cruel treatments and slaughtered, with children killed, women killed, and the sick murdered, or at most they just verbally comment on the matter. If they are really supporters of human rights, why are they dead silent in these cases? Why are the supporters of human rights silent regarding Palestine, where a nation has been forcefully displaced, their lands occupied, and even today, Palestinians and their supporters in Lebanon and Palestinian refugee camps are not left in peace and bombarded at every occasion? Are these supporters of human rights or liars and deceivers? Human rights according to Western culture is anti-human rights and equals the rights of the cruel individuals over human beings. This [bogus] definition of human rights has nothing to do with human rights. We support human rights and Islam supports the rights of humans. No other doctrine respects the value of human dignity as much as Islam. One of the Islamic principles that has always been presented when introducing Islam is the principle of “human respect”. We will not wait for the West to teach us about human rights or advise us on protecting the rights of humans. We are the first supporters of human rights ourselves. But human rights are defensible under the protection of Islam, where the rights of human beings count.

We support human rights and will pursue human rights, regardless of what this UN commission or that International committee say. We support the rights of humans because Islam orders us to; because it is an Islamic principle. But we consider what they claim, to be false, and deceptive. Their support for human rights is similar to their support for women’s rights. The imperialists, oppressors, and pillagers of the world, those who ignore the rights of nations, and destroy the interests of weaker nations, and the occupiers of weaker countries, are the so-called bearers of the flag of advocating human rights and women’s rights. It is obvious that Muslim nations cannot pay any attention to them.

The U.S., the biggest violator of human rights

It is with the support and assistance of the Americans that the usurping Zionist regime is doing all these evil acts in the region. What situation is Palestine in? What situation are the Palestinians in? What situation is Gaza in? Do people in the world not know in what situation the people of Gaza are? In that oppressed land, a patient who is in urgent need of treatment is bedridden and he does not have access to basic medications. Why is that? It is because America is behind the usurping Zionist regime.

Despite the fact that the United States itself has the greatest role in fomenting terrorism and supporting terrorists in the world, U.S. officials are accusing the Islamic Republic and Muslims of committing acts of terrorism. U.S. troops and security forces are perpetrating the ugliest crimes in different parts of occupied Iraq, and their heinous acts at Abu Ghraib prison are just an instance of the atrocities they are committing in that country.
As far as I know and according to the available information and statistics, perhaps no country in the world has violated human rights as much as the United States has done. They insult and trample on the rights of human beings in Iraq, Afghanistan, Guantanamo and even in their own prisons. But they flagrantly accuse other nations of violating human rights.
In addition to their crimes in various parts of the world, they are also committing human rights violations in the United States itself. African Americans are still suffering from oppression, prejudice, discrimination and different pressures. During the presidency of George Bush, Sr., African Americans staged a great riot in some states because of the oppression and injustice that they were suffering. Since the police could not quell the riot, the army was called in.
At the time of the next U.S. president, Bill Clinton, more than eighty members of an American religious group known as Branch Davidians, a Christian cult opposed to the U.S. government’s policies, were burned in their headquarters alive, since they refused to come out of their buildings and surrender to federal agents. However, those claiming to support human rights did not turn a hair! This is what they describe as observing and advocating human rights!
Under the incumbent U.S. president, when the United States was trying to occupy Afghanistan, American forces not only dropped bombs on Afghan civilians and destroyed their homes in cities and villages, but they also massacred a large number of prisoners at a prison in northern Afghanistan. But the West’s media empire prevented the report form circulating in the world.
Despite all these crimes and human rights violations committed by the United States, U.S. officials are accusing other countries, including the Islamic Republic, of violating human rights. The banner of human rights is carried by those who have committed the most human rights violations themselves.
