Rights organization calls for international inquiry into death of Saudi dissident

SHAFAQNAThe United Nations Human Rights Council calls for an independent international investigation into the death of religious opposition figure Abdelaziz el-Dhamiri who died under custody in Saudi Arabia.

In a new statement, UN Human Rights Council has condemned the inappropriate condition of free speech prisoners and ill-treatment of opposition figures in the Saudi jails. The UNHCR stated the kingdom must stop human rights violations as well as physical and psychological torture of political detainees and called for an independent inquiry into lack of attention to health condition of prisoners and el-Dhamiri’s death that allegedly took place due to medical negligence.

Saleh Abdelaziz el-Dhamiri, 60, was a religious preacher who died at the Taraffeyah Prison in Riyadh Friday August 2. He had been imprisoned since four years ago for supporting families of political prisoners and demanding the release of other preachers. El-Dhamiri who suffered heart problem had been held in solitary confinement. Reports indicate he was buried a day later in his hometown of Sakaka, northwestern Saudi Arabia. News about el-Dhamiri’s death was first reported by the Twitter account of Saudi Advocacy group, Prisoners of Conscience.

This is not the first time that a political prisoner dies under custody in the kingdom. Dean of the faculty of the Holy Quran at the Islamic University of Medina Ahmed al-Emari lost his life due to torture and ill-treatment in January 2019.
