SHAFAQNA– The Muslim community in the city of Sterling Heights, one of Detroit’s core suburbs, has managed to win a court battle against Islamophobes who were trying to obstruct the building of a local mosque.
The district court of Sterling Heights ruled on August 16, 2019 that the construction of the mosque could continue and the Muslim community has not breached any regulation.
A group of people with Islamophobia leanings took an action against the city’s American-Islamic Center, the body responsible for the mosque construction in 2015. They argued that the construction of the mosque is illegal over lack of parking lots, local traffic etc.
The Islamic Center in return filed a lawsuit against the city’s municipality based on the 2017 regulations of the US Justice Department.
Finally, a three-member jury panel ruled on Friday that preventing Muslims from building their place of worship violated their religious freedom and issued the green light to the Islamic Center of Sterling Heights to continue the construction of mosque in the Macomb county of the state of Michigan.
