SHAFAQNA– Saudi Arabian activists say authorities have prevented Shia worshipers from attending the opening ceremony of a new mosque in the Eastern Province.
Authorities summoned the organizers of the event that was scheduled on occasion of Shia Eid Al Ghadeer (August 20) and forced them to cancel the inauguration of Al Khidr Mosque, on Tarout Island. They did not provide any explanation.
Despite that, hundreds of local people braved the ban and attended the evening prayers led by Imam Sheikh Abdul-Karim Al Habil in the mosque.
Al Khidhr Mosque is located on a hill overlooking Al Rabieeya county, Tarout Island. It is believed to have been built on the footsteps of the Prophet Khidr. The mosque was first constructed in 1956 on the ruins of a pre-Islamic place of worship and a Shia Kuwaiti citizen financed its renovation in 2018-2019.
