SHAFAQNA – The Grand Ayatollah Makarem answered questions about taking clothes off in mourning ceremonies.

Question: What is the ruling on taking clothes off in mourning ceremonies?

The Grand Ayatollah Makarem: It is Haram to take clothes off at the time of beating on chests in front of non-Mahrams; and in other situations because it leads to weakness of the cause, taking the precaution must be avoided; but there is no problem if a bit of chest is open for beating on the chest or a bit of back is open for beating of the back with chains.

Question: What does it mean by weakness of the religion in regard to mourning ceremonies and beating on the head with a dagger?

The Grand Ayatollah Makarem: It means that it insults the religion and causes belittling it in views and opinions of others.
