UN report: Saudi Arabia executed 134 people this year alone

SHAFAQNAA new report by the UN Human Rights Council indicates that at least six people who were minors at the time of their arrest are among the 134 people beheaded or hanged by Saudi regime in 2019.

The report presented by Baroness Helena Kennedy at an event hosted by international group The Death Penalty Project in Geneva. It reads in addition to 134 detainees  who were executed, 24 others are the imminent risk of death. It adds 37 out of 134 executed prisoners were the activists killed on April 23, 2019 following lengthy detention periods and solitary confinements that included torture and unfair trials.

The report by the legal action charity emphasizes that systematic torture of prisoners and sham unfair trials lead to death penalties despite promises by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to reduce the use of capital punishment in the kingdom.

Baroness Kennedy expressed concern about the extra judicial murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and the way it was simply presented as the work of some rogue elements and not part of a systematic pattern of human rights abuses.

The Death Penalty Project’s report finally warns about rights violations in Saudi Arabia that have been intensified at an alarming rate in recent months. Baroness Kennedy has described the kingdom of Saudi Arabia a cruel system and urged the international community to take her report to heart and ensure that something will be done.
