SHAFAQNA- The Islamic Students’ Union in a letter to Antonio Guteress, Secretary-General of United Nations, asked UN to use its tools to bring about peace and stability in Syria and to relieve tensions between Turkey and Syria.
The full text of the letter is as follows:
António Guterres
Secretary-General of the United Nations
Hello;
You are well aware that the President of Turkey announced on Wednesday, October 9, 2019, the beginning of his country’s military operation called the “Fountain of Peace” against Kurdish militias in northern Syria. He claimed that the operation would thwart terrorist threats against Turkey, leading to the creation of a safe zone and facilitating the return of Syrian refugees to their homes.
Turkey’s operations on Syrian soil will not neutralize the danger of terrorism and it will lead to terrorists’ growth and survival at the regional level. On the other hand, the attack will further complicate the situation in West Asia and create turmoil in its security environment. Other implications of the military campaign include endangering the lives and security of civilians, blocking relief routes, exacerbating the crisis, creating a new wave of refugees and growing terrorism.
The Islamic Students’ Union, the largest student union of the Islamic Republic of Iran, does not consider military action not only a factor to address its security concerns, but also leads to material damages, realizing the security concerns raised by Turkey. And he is widely regarded as a human being and accordingly declares his opposition to this action.
In the end, we believe that it is possible to resolve the tensions by peaceful means and respect for Syrian national sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as the Adana Agreement. As a result, you are expected to take immediate action, using UN tools to bring about peace and stability in Syria and to relieve tensions between Turkey and Syria to prevent its devastating effects.
