SHAFAQNA-UNSC issues statement on Turkey offensive expressing concern, but stops short of condemning Ankara.
The UN Security Council has held its second closed-door meeting to discuss the latest developments on Turkey’s offensive into Syria.
Members agreed on a brief, joint statement but stopped short of making a collective call for an all-out ceasefire, Al Jazeera reported.
After Wednesday’s meeting the United States, China and the council’s five European members – Britain, France, Germany, Poland and Belgium – all separately called on Turkey to halt its attack, but the Security Council statement did not, according to reuters.
The offensive has forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee and raised doubt about the fate of thousands of Islamic State fighters in Kurdish jails.
