SHAFAQNA- Nearly 5,000 people gathered to commemorate the 40th of Imam Husayn (A.S) in Dearborn, MI.
Dearborn has the largest concentrated Muslim population in all of America that makes up about 45 percent of the city’s population.
The annual meeting point is at Karbala Islamic Educational Center, located in Dearborn, MI. Founder of KIEC, Imam Husham Al-Husainy has been spearheading and leading the procession for the past 25 years.
Al-Husainy says “We have walked through every weather you can possibly imagine…snow, sleet, rain, below freezing temps and high winds but that has never stopped us from carrying out the message of Imam Husayn and his legacy.”
On this day, the sun was shining bright and temps were comfortably mild. Participants held flags and banners showcasing the heroism and sacrifices of Imam Husayn.
Although politics were not addressed during the event, the organizers did allow Muslim related issues such as Indian brutality in Kashmir as one of the approved posters that were carried throughout the walk.
During the procession, an airplane flew across the sky circulating a banner with the words of “Labbaik Ya Hussain” meaning, We pledge our allegiance to you, Oh Hussein.
Participants were met at their final destination with dozens and dozens of tents. The park was dramatically transformed into a make shift modern day Arbaeen pilgrimage, replicating the largest annual public gathering that is held every year in Karbala, Iraq.
The tents were set up by local non-profit organizations and neighboring Islamic centers who wanted to partake in spreading thawab. Food, fruit, drinks, and sweets were distributed in great abundance with no shortages for the walkers.
In addition to the walk, a blood donation drive and health clinic were set up inside the Karbala Center. Blood was being donated to the Red Cross in honor of Imam Husayn (A.S) along with free medical evaluations and screenings.
