SHAFAQNA- Press TV: The International Day of Solidarity with the People of Palestine marked in Moscow on November 29, and Russian President Vladimir Putin sent a message to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the occasion.
On the same day Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov.
Lavrov stated that the situation in the Palestinian-Israeli settlement has reached an impasse and that the international community should make efforts to maintain the basis for a settlement and not allow unilateral steps leading to the rejection of a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Mladenov for his part called for the resolution of the Palestinian issue.
Russian and Palestinian diplomats, as well as representatives of the Arab League and the United Nations gathered together to mark the day.
Every year Moscow calls for a resolution of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Russia is Palestine’s important partner in the United Nations and calls for its recognition as a sovereign state.
When it comes to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Russia supports UN General Assembly and Security Council resolutions as legal basis for the settlement of disputes. Moscow says it will continue making efforts to achieve a just solution to the decades-old problem.
In 1977, the UN General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29 as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. It marks the day in 1947 when the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on the partition of Palestine.
