Netanyahu : Israel won’t return to 1967 borders

SHAFAQNA (Shia International News Association) – Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu says the Tel Aviv regime will not retreat from East al-Quds (Jerusalem) and the West Bank within two years.

“We…stand against the possibility of a diplomatic assault, that is, an attempt to compel us by means of UN decisions to withdraw to the 1967 lines within two years,” said Netanyahu on Sunday.

Israel occupied the Palestinian territories of East al-Quds, the Gaza Strip, and the West Bank during the Six-Day War of 1967. Tel Aviv withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but its forces have been carrying out regular deadly forays into the besieged sliver ever since the pullout.

Palestinians are seeking to create an independent state on the above-mentioned territories, and are demanding that Israel withdraw from the occupied Palestinian land.

Speaking ahead of the weekly meeting of his cabinet, the Israeli prime minister said he would talk about the issue in Italy with US Secretary of State John Kerry and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi on Monday.

The comments came as the Palestinian leadership wants to submit a draft resolution to the UN Security Council demanding that Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories come to an end by November 2016.

The Arab League has expressed support for the text, while the United States, which has repeatedly vetoed such resolutions against Israel, has opposed it.

On November 29, 2012, the 193-member UN General Assembly voted to upgrade Palestine’s status to non-member observer state.

The observer state status grants Palestinians access to UN agencies and the International Criminal Court (ICC), where they can file formal complaints against the Israeli regime.

Tel Aviv has refused to return to the 1967 borders and is unwilling to discuss the issue of al-Quds.
