Sheikh Nimr Commemorated at London Islamic Center

SHAFAQNA- A large number of Muslim scholars, clerics, academic figures and others took part at the ceremony on Sunday, January 20.

Addressing the event, prominent cleric Hojat-ol-Islam Ali Alami underlined that Sheikh Nimr had no objective other than Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice.

He added that Sheikh Nimr neither sought positions nor encouraged violence, but the Saudis killed him despite global calls for a fair trial for the Shia scholar.

Other speakers at the ceremony also condemned the execution of sheikh Nimr saying the Saudi regime, which is backed by Western governments, has no respect for human rights.

They also underscored that Divine vengeance awaits the oppressors.

The speakers further called for enhanced Islamic unity and warned that Muslims should not fall into the trap of sectarian clashes.

Saudi Arabia’s execution of 47 prisoners, including Sheikh Nimr, on January 2 drew global condemnation.

The executions took place in 12 cities in Saudi Arabia, four prisons using firing squads and the others beheading. The bodies were then hanged from gibbets in the most severe form of punishment available in the kingdom’s law.

Sheikh Nimr had been detained in July 2012 on charges of delivering anti-regime speeches and defending political prisoners.
