Shafaqna English– “Fadel Al-Gharawi”, Head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights, announced: “The concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has increased from nearly 278 parts per million in 1750 at the beginning of the industrial era to 427 parts per million in 2024.”
According to Shafaqna, quoted by Al-Forat, Al-Gharawi, in a statement, added: In 2021, greenhouse gas emissions in Iraq was 177.8 million tons, while 27.1 million tons were recorded in the past three years until 2024. It means that gas emissions have increased sevenfold and are now increasing by 4.88% annually.
Thus, Iraq ranks fifth among the most polluted countries in terms of carbon dioxide emissions and global warming indicators. This is while Baghdad ranks thirteenth among the most polluted cities and Erbil ranks 336 in terms of carbon dioxide emissions.
