Shafaqna English- Buratha is a sacred Mosque in Baghdad that holds significant importance for Shia Muslims due to the narrations about Imam Ali’s (AS) presence and miraculous events taking place at the mosque site when he returned from the Nahrawan battle.
The Buratha neighborhood was located in the western part of Baghdad, in the Karkh District, south of the Bab-al-Muḥawwal area. The name Buratha originates from the Arabic word which means “outdoor” or “exterior.”
According to Shia sources, Imam Ali (AS) prayed in the Mosque when he returned from the battle. Some narrations mention a detailed conversation between Imam Ali (AS) and a Christian monk, and some even mention a four-day stay of Imam Ali (AS) at this place. These sources highlight the significant merits of the mosque, including the miracle of the sunset for Imam Ali (AS) at the Mosque.
The Buratha Mosque has also been identified as a place of worship for Lady Mary (SA), Jesus (AS) , and even Prophet Abraham (PBUH). Today, with the expansion of Kadhimiyyah, the Buratha neighborhood has become part of this larger city, and the site of Imam Ali’s (AS) stay is marked by a domed structure at the entrance of the Mosque. The Buratha Mosque is one of the main centers for Shia Muslims in Baghdad for Friday prayers. On 18 April 2006, three terrorists attacked the Mosque during a prayer gathering, killing 69 people and injuring 130 others.
In the Mosque, there’s a white and sacred stone known as the Buratha Stone, kept in a glass case, which is believed to be the stone where Lady Mary (SA) placed Prophet Jesus (AS) after his birth.
