New discovery of scientists: How immune cells attack cancer

CANCER

Shafaqna English- A new study has discovered that our natural killer cells, from the immune system which protect against disease and infections, instinctively recognize and attack a protein that drives cancer growth.

“Killer cells are an emerging form of immunotherapy that shows huge promise. The XPO1 protein examined by the scientists is essential for normal cell function.

The Southampton scientists found that a peptide — short chains of amino acids — derived from the XPO1 protein attracted the natural killer cells.

This, they say, triggers the body’s immune response against the cancerous cells.

Furthermore, following clinical trials, inhibition of XPO1 is gaining traction as a cancer therapeutic target and is now licensed for multiple myeloma and diffuse large B cell lymphoma . Thus, this protein has an important role in both the pathogenesis and treatment of cancer.
