Forty terrorists were killed and two were captured in Sunday’s terror attacks in Northwest China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, local authority said.

Media outlet ts.cn, a website affiliated with the Xinjiang government, reported Thursday night that the attacks had cost the lives of six civilians and injured another 54 people, including 32 Uyghurs and 22 Hans.

Two police officers and two auxiliary police officers were killed in the attacks.

A series of explosions took place around 5 pm on Sunday in several locations in Xinjiang’s Bayingolin Mongolian Autonomous Prefecture, including in front of a shop in Luntai county and two police stations in the townships of Yangxia and Terakbazar.

The lead suspect, Mamat Tursun, who was shot dead during the attack, graduated from a vocational school in 2003. It was reported that Tursun had gradually developed extremist thoughts after graduation.

Since 2008, he had refused to dine with his parents or attend his father’s funeral because he believed that his parents were not true believers as they both worked for the government. He also refused to attend his younger brother’s wedding because his brother applied for a marriage certificate at the civil affairs bureau.

Working in construction, Tursun was reported to have recruited and indoctrinated other terrorists from his coworkers.
