Iran: Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque in Isfahan

Shafaqna English- Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, located in Naqsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan, was registered as a national heritage site of Iran in 1310. It showcases the extraordinary architecture, tile work, and decorations, highlighting some of the most beautiful and finest masterpieces of the Safavid era.

This magnificent building has stood for centuries, standing opposite the grand Ali Qapu Palace and the eastern porch of Naqsh-e Jahan Square, captivating the attention of every visitor.

Muhammad Reza Isfahani was one of the most renowned architects of the Safavid era, who skilfully executed the Isfahan style of architecture in this Mosque.

According to Sputnik News Agency, this artistic masterpiece is considered one of the seven unknown wonders and the world’s top must-see structures.

One of the unique and distinctive features of this Mosque, which is also common in most mosques in Isfahan, is its remarkable acoustics. This feature enables a clear and resonant echo of sound within the Mosque, creating a captivating atmosphere for worshippers and visitors.

Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque was exclusively reserved for Shah Abbas and his royal family, and ordinary people were not allowed to enter it. Moreover, the construction of this Mosque took eighteen years to complete. This exclusivity added to the grandeur and prestige of the Mosque, reflecting the social hierarchy and the royal family’s influence during the Safavid era.

Sheikh Lotfollah was one of the most prominent Shia scholars who resided in the Jabal Amel region of present-day Lebanon. At the invitation of Shah Abbas I, he, along with some other prominent Shia scholars, came to Iran to settle and continue their religious activities. This migration was significant as it contributed to the growth of Shia scholarship in Iran during the Safavid era and solidified the country’s status as a leading center of Shia Islam.
