France moves closer to total ban on Hijab in sporting competitions

Shafaqna English– A proposed law banning athletes from wearing Hijab in all sports events is set to be voted on by the French parliament’s lower house, following approval from the upper chamber.

Prime Minister François Bayrou has reportedly distanced himself from the proposed legislation, despite his initial support, saying: “We must not stigmatise our nine million Muslim compatriots.”

The issue has caused a rift in the French cabinet. While Education Minister Élisabeth Borne has expressed reservations about the ban, Minister of Justice Gérald Darmanin has said he will resign if the government does not back the bill.

Similar bans have already been adopted by individual French sporting associations. Wearing of Hijab is prohibited at all levels of French football, basketball, and volleyball competition, including amateur. During the 2024 Summer Olympics, hosted in Paris, athletes competing for the French national team were prohibited from wearing Hijab.

Amnesty International, among other human rights organisations has said the ban violates the human rights of Muslim women
