Shafaqna English– Iraq holds the distinction of having many artifacts in the British Museum.
These treasures, many of which date back thousands of years, are a testament to Iraq’s rich history as the cradle of civilization. However, for decades, much of this heritage was lost or stolen during times of conflict and unrest. It is claimed that over 150,000 artifacts from Iraq are in the British Museum.
Late last year, a significant step was taken in the effort to return Iraq’s cultural treasures. The UK’s government returned 27,000 artifacts to the Iraqi National Museum in Baghdad, marking a pivotal moment in the ongoing repatriation efforts. Among the artifacts returned was a rare Assyrian relief that had been stolen from the ancient city of Nimrud, further emphasizing the importance of these efforts in preserving Iraq’s cultural legacy.
