Afghanistan: Families flee Kandahar’s Maiwand amid drought

Shafaqna EnglishDue to the impacts of climate change and drought, several families have been forced to abandon their homes in the Maiwand District of Kandahar.

Although the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced on May 1 of this year the allocation of over $16 million to help mitigate the effects of drought in Afghanistan, climate change continues to threaten people’s lives.

Hayatullah, a resident of Maiwand District, said: “People will be forced to leave this area because there is no water, and they cannot meet their basic needs. The only option is for them to abandon their villages and migrate to the cities.”

Khayrullah, another district resident, said, “When we first came here, the underground water level was 60 meters. Later, it dropped to 100 meters, and now it has reached 200 meters. Life has become more difficult, and people are compelled to leave these areas.”
