Experts call for more understanding of artificial intelligence

Shafaqna English- Leading scholars are calling for a more grounded understanding of artificial intelligence (AI), warning that misleading narratives could distort public perception and policy decisions, as GeekWire wrote.

In a recent article published by “GeekWire” University of Washington linguistics professor Emily M. Bender and sociologist Alex Hanna, Director of Research at the Distributed AI Research Institute, caution against the widespread hype surrounding AI technologies. They argue that popular terms like “artificial intelligence,” “chatbot,” and “AI artist” create misleading analogies that suggest these systems possess human-like cognition or creativity—capabilities they fundamentally lack.

Bender and Hanna stress that these technologies are, in essence, sophisticated pattern recognition tools trained on large datasets. When marketed as quasi-sentient agents, they say, public expectations are elevated beyond what the tools can actually deliver.

Hanna further highlights the labor implications of unchecked AI deployment. While not always replacing jobs outright, AI adoption can lead to degraded job quality, layoffs, or a shift to precarious gig work. These outcomes are often overshadowed in narratives that emphasize efficiency and innovation.

The authors advocate for critical engagement with AI, encouraging users, developers, and policymakers to resist inflated claims and assess the true social and economic impact of these technologies. By demystifying AI, they argue, society can take a more ethical and pragmatic approach to its integration.
