Nature Helps Ease Chronic Back Pain

Shafaqna Science- Spending time in nature can help people with chronic lower back pain better manage their condition, according to a new study. Researchers from the University of Plymouth and the University of Exeter interviewed patients who had suffered from back pain for up to 38 years and found that natural environments provided physical and mental relief.

Participants reported that gardens, forests, and other green spaces offered distraction from pain, reduced stress, and encouraged gentle exercise. However, accessibility issues—such as uneven terrain and lack of seating—limited some people’s ability to enjoy these benefits.

The researchers suggest incorporating nature-based therapies into treatment plans and exploring virtual reality as an alternative for those unable to visit outdoor spaces. The study, published in The Journal of Pain, highlights the potential of nature—and technology—to improve pain management strategies.

Lead author Alexander Smith said: “Our findings show that nature can play a key role in pain relief, but better accessibility is needed.” Senior author Dr Sam Hughes added that VR could help bridge the gap for those facing physical barriers.
