Shafaqna English- Ghamari Cave, one of the prehistoric caves in the Khorramabad Valley, has been inscribed on the UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
The “Khorramabad Valley” file, focusing on the Palaeolithic caves, was registered as Iran’s 29th entry on the World Heritage List. Meanwhile, Falak-ol-Aflak Castle and the Broken Bridge missed the chance for inscription.
According to Shafaqna Persian, quoting ISNA, the 47th session of the UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee was held on Friday (11 July 2025) at UNESCO headquarters in France, during which the file titled “Prehistoric (Palaeolithic) Caves of Khorramabad Valley” was inscribed as Iran’s 29th entry on the World Heritage List.
The caves of Khorramabad include Kaldar, Yafteh, Konji, Gilvaran, Ghamari, and the Gar Arjeneh rock shelter. These caves contain valuable evidence of the continuous presence of Neanderthals and various prehistoric (Palaeolithic) periods, with a history dating back over 60,000 years.
