Shafaqna English- A joint Kurdish-American archaeological team, during the fourth excavation season at the Matrab mound in the Shamamok area of Erbil Province, succeeded in discovering valuable historical artifacts dating back 6,000 years.
According to Rudaw, the excavation project in this area is being carried out in cooperation with the Erbil Antiquities and Heritage Management and Bryn Mawr College. The project began in 2022 and has so far been carried out over four seasons on four small mounds, each measuring 100 by 150 meters.
Ali Bani Shari, Representative of the Erbil Antiquities Management, said that excavations at the Matrab mound uncovered the remains of several structures, including six rooms, one of which was used as a kitchen. A larger building was also discovered, which is likely to have been a large palace.
Professor Rocco Palermo, Director of the Project, said: We are trying to understand how small rural communities responded to major changes such as the formation of civilizations and the rise of empires.
