Shafaqna English- The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) reported that over 3.5 million children under the age of five in Afghanistan are suffering from malnutrition.
According to the agency, 1.4 million of these children are afflicted with severe acute malnutrition, a crisis that is worsening each day due to the increasing return of migrants and a decline in available resources.
Amirhossein Yarparvar, UNICEF’s Head of Nutrition in Afghanistan, stated: “Data from the Nutrition Information System shows that more than 28,000 children with severe acute malnutrition are hospitalized. They are under six months old, and 30% of them are at an age where the only suitable food is breast milk. Therefore, breastfeeding can prevent malnutrition.”
