Shafaqna English- Hong Kong food producers are stepping up Halal-Certified product development to cater to Muslim tourists and niche overseas markets, as exports to Muslim countries double over the past four years, according to South China Morning Post.
Local companies are tapping into the growing global demand for Halal food, producing certified pre-packed products for visitors and Chinese restaurants in the Middle East. The number of halal-certified restaurants in Hong Kong has jumped from about 100 in early 2024 to over 170 by mid-April, yet industry leaders say supply still falls short during peak tourist seasons such as Muslim holidays.
The Hong Kong Tourism Board has partnered with the Islamic Community Fund to encourage more restaurants to obtain certification. Beyond dining, Halal-Certified baked goods and souvenirs are increasingly available, while companies like My Care Healthcare and Koon Chun Sauce Factory adapt traditional recipes for the Halal market.
Annual exports from Hong Kong to Muslim countries have surged from HK$2.7 billion in 2020 to HK$5.5 billion in 2024, with re-exports also rising, driven by products ranging from sauces and beverages to telecoms equipment and electrical machinery.
