Study warns using AI in medicine may weaken cancer detection skills

Shafaqna English- A new study has found that artificial intelligence, while improving detection of pre-cancerous growths, can erode doctors’ diagnostic abilities within months once the technology is removed, according to Bloomberg.

Research published in “The Lancet Gastroenterology and Hepatology” shows that doctors using AI to spot colon tumors saw detection rates drop by about 20% when the tool was withdrawn, compared to pre-AI performance. The trial, conducted in four Polish endoscopy centers, involved 19 highly experienced physicians performing colonoscopies both with and without AI assistance over a six-month period.

Scientists said over-reliance on AI likely reduced clinicians’ motivation, focus, and sense of responsibility during unaided procedures. Experts warn the impact could be greater for trainees.

The findings echo broader concerns raised by similar studies, including MIT research showing reduced cognitive engagement when using AI for tasks like writing. While AI continues to hold promise for improving outcomes, researchers stress the need to guard against skill degradation in healthcare.
