Shafaqna English- USA’s President Trump and other world leaders signed the first phase of the Gaza ceasefire agreement during a summit in Egypt.
Trump has promised lasting peace in the Middle East after signing a Gaza ceasefire deal with the leaders of Qatar, Egypt and Turkiye. Trump is not getting into any real commitments on what happens down the road.
Despite the carnage in Gaza, Trump has received a welcome across the Middle East as he visited Israel and Egypt to celebrate the ceasefire deal.
The agreement reached in Sharm-el-Sheikh lacks detail and substance and reflects the USA’s administration’s reluctance to address Palestinian statehood or the right to self-determination.
This omission has raised serious questions. Countries have made it clear that the peace Washington is celebrating cannot be realised while Palestinians remain under occupation and denied their basic rights. Analysts have cast doubt on Trump’s claims of ushering in a moment of peace for the Middle East.
“I doubt it very much,” Sultan Barakat, Professor at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, told Al-Jazeera. “The focus has never really been on the grand peace making in the region, but on the ceasefire and the release of the captives.
“He would like everyone to be incredibly grateful that he stopped the killing, which should not have been happening in the first place.”
Moreover, Barakat pointed out that there was no prospect of a two-state solution coming to fruition any time soon.
