Shafaqna English- Iraq wins membership in the UN Human Rights Council for the term 2026-2028.
“Iraq has achieved a new diplomatic accomplishment by winning membership in the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term from 01 January 2026 to 31 December 2028, during the elections held by the United Nations General Assembly at the organization’s headquarters in New York on Tuesday, 14 October 2025,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement received by the Iraqi News Agency – INA.
The Ministry added: “Iraq’s victory came after receiving (175) votes out of 193 member states of the United Nations. This achievement reflects the international community’s confidence in Iraq’s democratic path and its commitment to the principles of human rights, the rule of law, and pluralism.”
Iraq got membership in the Council as part of the Asia-Pacific Group, alongside India, Pakistan, and Vietnam.
